Why circular section is mostly used in sewerage systems?
The circular section is usually used as sewer pipe in most
sewerage systems. The main reason behind this is the least perimeter advantage of the circular section. Among all mathematical shapes, for a given area circular
section has the least perimeter value. For example for a given A m2, the Square section gives a perimeter of 4ÖA
m, Equilateral triangle gives a perimeter of (6ÖA)/ÖÖ3= 4.56ÖA m and so on whereas the
circular section gives a perimeter of 2ÖpÖA=
3.55ÖA m.

Thus giving the least perimeter circular section provides maximum
hydraulic mean depth for running full flow and half-full flow conditions. Thus
it is the most efficient section for hydraulics parameters.
The second big advantage is its uniform smoothness. The circular section is uniform ar very much smooth along with its perimeter. Hence,
suspended particles that are running through the sewer has less possibility to
settle down or deposit.
The criterion of the requirement of cement concrete gives
another great benefit using circular sections. Because the circular section has
the lowest amount of quantity of concrete materials to form and thus reduces the
construction cost. Even the construction process of the circular sections is easier
than other sections.
These huge conveniences make the circular section is best the choice for sewer pipes among sewerage systems.
